Whether this is your first experience with natural stone or you have done this before, the process of selecting a material can be overwhelming.  Preparing ahead of time can save you a lot of stress and ensure that the final result is in keeping with your expectations.  Keep in mind that this is a major purchase.

Determine Your Likes and Dislikes

Design magazines can be a great resource for style ideas.  You may find it helpful to create a file of photographs, magazine articles, and notes.  You may also visit local Parade of Homes, as they are often a showcase of current trends.  Be sure to speak with family and friends who have recently remodeled or built a home to get their input on what did or did not work for them.

Consider Current and Future Lifestyle Needs

Think about how you intend to use the space, who will use it, and your long-term plans for your home. Will maintenance be an issue, or is the space more of a showplace that is rarely used?  In addition, consider how long you plan to stay in your home.  If this is the home you plan to live in for years to come, it makes sense to put your personality into it.  On the other hand, if you intend to sell within the next few years, you might consider a material that will appeal to a broader spectrum of potential buyers.

Determine a Budget

Do you plan to pay cash for the project, or will you need a loan to complete the project?  You may consider researching loan and credit possibilities.  Keep in mind, the price range for natural stone can vary tremendously.  If you are drawn to the more exotic stones, do not plan on spending the same as a basic, Level I material.

Create a Basic Layout

For new construction, request a floor plan from your builder or architect.  In the case of a remodel, draw a rough sketch of the floor plan.  Make all measurements in inches and indicate the locations of appliances and sinks.
